Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah is an American musician and rapper. Queen Latifah's work in the fields of music, film and television has resulted in her receiving a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah is the daughter of the Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and an Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior, was raised and born in Newark New Jersey. Latifah's parents divorced when Latifah was ten years old. aged, was 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic school and was educated in Newark New Jersey. She went to in the Baptist church. Latifah was her stage name at the time she was eight years old. The word means extremely delicate in Arabic. Always a tall girl at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward on the basketball team at her high school. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz in a performance at her highschool. Latifah started beatboxing in the fresh rap ladies. Latifah was part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created a demo of the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was given to host Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. The single caught the eye of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and in 1988 issued her first single Wrath of My Madness.
